BURRI la pittura, irriducibile presenza

Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Venice

As part of the 58th Venice Biennale, from 10 May to 28 July 2019 the Fondazione Cini will be hosting BURRI la pittura, irriducibile presenza, an important retrospective on Alberto Burri to round off a season of celebrations of the Umbria-born artist in Italy and beyond.

Curated by Bruno Corà (President of the Burri Foundation) and organised by Tornabuoni Art in association with Palazzo Albizzini Collezione Burri di Città di Castello with the support of Intesa Sanpaolo and the Gallerie d’Italia, the exhibition has been specially designed for Venice, charting key moments in the maestro’s exploration of ‘material’ through many of his great masterpieces.

The Bank’s Art, Cultural and Historical Heritage Department became involved in order to optimise and share with the public, via the exhibition and catalogue, a core of key works by the great maestro from the Bank’s collection.

Some fifty artworks have been selected from Burri’s most significant series, on loan from leading museums in Italy and beyond, from the Burri Foundation and prestigious private collections: Tars, Moulds and Sacks, through to Combustions, Woods, Plastics, Cracks and Cellotex, the last stage in the maestro’s artistic journey.
The Intesa Sanpaolo collection has loaned two influential pieces from Burri’s artistic oeuvre: Sand and Red black.

Visitors gain an overall understanding of Burri’s art thanks to a multimedia documentary section charting his entire career, including rare films of him at work. The exhibition was designed by architect Tiziano Sarteanesi.

Intesa Sanpaolo’s involvement as Partner for the exhibition at the Fondazione Cini reflects its great commitment – in keeping with the principles of Progetto Cultura project – to support important ventures throughout the country celebrating the talents and masters of Italy’s great artistic heritage.
